required assignment #1 world-in-a-box_

collect VB [WITH OBJECT] 1. Bring or gather together (things, typically when scattered or widespread).

(from Oxford Dictionaries, http://www.oxforddictionaries.com)

For this assignment we were ask to create a collection of objects. After arranging them, we should submit a photograph of the whole set (see instructions below).

I have made an ordered composition with some of the objects that I have been collecting from different places in different times. I like these objects by themselves, but also because of their stories, invented or related to the circumstances where I found them. They are abandoned objects. They have no owner, as I do not think that they are of my own.

Click, if you want, on the objects in the picture to see some notes about them.

Instructions for required assignment #1: World in a Box

  • Using any means, materials and style you like, create a collection of objects and design a means of displaying them. Some things to think about:

    • Your objects can be in two (flat) and/or three dimensions.

    • You could make the objects or collect them from elsewhere.

    • They might belong together chronologically, or not.

    • Think about how the objects can be combined to make something that adds up to more than just themselves (or alternatively, how the collection “is what it is”).

    • Think about how the objects relate to each other spatially and how the means of display reinforces or complicates that sense of space and objects within it.

  • Photograph your displayed collection. Consider the camera frame as another means of display. How can this frame/box shift perception yet again?

  • Post your photograph. Accepted formats are .jpg, .gif, .img, or PDF. Give your “boxed world” a title.

  • You may also include a 1-2 sentence introduction about your assignment.
